Daxbot Robots Begin Sidewalk Accessibility Assessment in Pleasanton

Residents may notice small Daxbot robots traveling along sidewalks and pedestrian pathways throughout Pleasanton as the City begins fieldwork for its ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan.  

Working with Bureau Veritas and Daxbot, the City is using robotic field-collection technology to document existing conditions and identify potential accessibility barriers throughout Pleasanton’s pedestrian network. The robots travel at walking speed and collect information about sidewalks and trails, curb ramps, signalized intersections, transit stops, and other pedestrian facilities. 

The Sidewalk Accessibility Assessment is part of the City of Pleasanton’s ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan which is focused on identifying potential accessibility barriers and supporting future improvements to City facilities and public spaces. 

Over the course of the project, the assessment will cover approximately 360 miles of sidewalks and trails, 1,850 curb ramps, 125 signalized intersections, and 266 transit stops throughout Pleasanton. Using robotic technology allows the project team to gather consistent information across this large area.  

The sidewalk assessment is part of the City’s broader ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. This effort will help guide future accessibility improvements. 

The ADA evaluation includes sidewalks, trails, intersections, transit stops, parks, buildings, parking lots, and other public spaces. Information collected through the assessment will help the City better understand conditions across its pedestrian network, inform future planning and prioritization, and support eligibility for grant opportunities related to accessibility improvements. 

Daxbot robots are designed to operate in shared public environments and will travel at a slow walking speed along pedestrian pathways. Data collection is limited to information about pedestrian infrastructure, and the robots do not store personal information. 

Residents may see the robots in different areas of Pleasanton as the assessment progresses throughout the community. The Daxbot robots are expected to be onsite in Pleasanton through the end of November.
