Youth in Government Day Inspires Future Leaders

On February 24, 2026, students from Pleasanton Unified School District high schools participated in the annual Youth in Government Day, a collaborative effort between the City of Pleasanton and PUSD that provides students with firsthand experience in local government and public service.

The day began with opening remarks from City and school leaders before students headed out to job shadow City staff across multiple departments, including Public Works, Finance, Recreation, Administration, and the Pleasanton Police Department. Students also had the opportunity to shadow Amador Valley High School Principal Malcom Norrington. Through these experiences, students observed how local government operates behind the scenes and gained insight into the people and processes that keep Pleasanton running each day.

In the afternoon, students worked together to prepare for a Mock City Council session. Collaborating in groups, they developed ideas and presented their recommendations in the City Council Chambers, gaining hands-on experience in civic engagement and public speaking. Lunch was prepared and coordinated by students in PUSD’s high school culinary programs, highlighting another example of experiential learning.

Youth in Government Day provides a valuable opportunity for students to explore leadership, civic responsibility, and careers in public service. The City of Pleasanton extends its appreciation to the students, City staff, PUSD partners, and mentors who helped make this year’s program a meaningful and successful experience.
