We want to share an important update regarding the Pleasanton Library hours of operation. Starting Monday, August 4, the Pleasanton Library will transition to a new weekly schedule, reducing our open hours from 62 to 48 per week. This change is part of a series of citywide budget adjustments adopted for the upcoming fiscal year, designed to address Pleasanton’s current fiscal challenges and safeguard the city’s long-term financial stability.
The new weekly hours are as follows:
- Monday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
- Tuesday: 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
- Wednesday: 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
- Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
- Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Sunday: Closed
We understand that this change will present difficulties for some individuals and families in our community. Please know that this decision was not made lightly. As we developed the new schedule, our top priority was to balance the needs of library users with the constraints of reduced funding — all while continuing to deliver essential services and quality programming.
With a focus on minimizing disruption for library users, several factors guided the creation of the new schedule. This involved a close analysis of library usage patterns and visitor trends, and ensuring a mix of morning, evening, and weekend hours to serve a variety of needs. Other factors included staffing capacity under the revised budget, and the need to keep to consistent 8-hour days to maintain operational efficiency and service quality.
In addition to the change in library hours, the following changes will also be made:
- Checkout Limits: The maximum number of physical library items that can be checked out at one time will be reduced from 100 to 50, beginning July 15. This change reflects a 50% reduction in the budget for new library materials and is intended to promote more equitable access to our collection.
- Holds Policy: Library users will no longer be able to place holds on items that are currently available on library shelves. Instead, we will move to a first-come, first-served model for checked-in materials, beginning July 15. This ensures more immediate and fair access for all visitors.
We remain committed to maintaining the high level of service that our community has come to expect. While in-person hours are changing, the library’s digital resources remain available 24/7—providing free access to eBooks, audiobooks, online newspapers, homework help, learning tools, and more. Explore our digital collection anytime at cityofpleasantonca.gov/your-community/pleasanton-library/digital-library-ebooks.
Core library programs will also continue, including storytimes, Paws to Read, Booklegger, afterschool programming, and adult literacy services. Updated program times will be published in August and begin in September.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate this transition. We look forward to welcoming you during our updated hours and continuing to serve you—both in person and online.
Sincerely,
Pleasanton Library
