Business Spotlight: The Olive Market
Where Heritage and Hospitality Meet in Pleasanton
For Issa Samara, food has always been about more than what is on the plate. It is a way to share culture, connect with others, and make people feel welcome. That philosophy is at the center of The Olive Market, a family-owned deli and specialty market in Pleasanton known for its handcrafted sandwiches, thoughtfully selected goods, and flavors inspired by culinary traditions from across the Mediterranean.
Located at 6455 Owens Drive, Suite D, The Olive Market has quickly earned a following among local food lovers. Its artisanal sandwiches have helped earn the business recognition as one of the Bay Area’s top delis, while shelves filled with local and imported specialty products give customers plenty to discover beyond the deli counter.
Issa’s path to The Olive Market stretches from Palestine to San Francisco and ultimately to the Tri-Valley. Born and raised in Palestine, he grew up surrounded by the cultures, flavors, and traditions of the Mediterranean. When he arrived in San Francisco at 17, the city’s diverse culinary scene further shaped his appreciation for food and introduced him to an even wider range of cuisines.
After getting married and moving to the Tri-Valley, Issa began to notice something he felt was missing from the local food scene: a place for handcrafted, consistent, high-quality sandwiches made with genuine care. With encouragement from his father and family, he set out to fill that gap.
His heritage also helped shape a broader vision for the business. Rather than focusing on a single cuisine, Issa wanted The Olive Market to celebrate the Mediterranean as a region rich with different cultures and culinary traditions.
“What makes The Olive Market special goes far beyond the menu; it’s rooted in heritage,” Issa shares.
That perspective can be found throughout the business, from its Italian-inspired sandwiches to the assortment of specialty foods available in the market. Together, they give customers an opportunity to enjoy familiar favorites while discovering something new.
After nearly a year of searching throughout the Bay Area for the right location, Issa found what he was looking for in Pleasanton.
“Pleasanton was a breath of fresh air,” he says. “From day one, the city intentionally opened its doors to independent businesses, backed by local landlords who value curated, community-focused spots over big corporate names.”
Since opening, that sense of welcome has continued through the relationships Issa and his family have built with customers throughout Pleasanton, becoming an important part of what he envisioned for The Olive Market.
Behind each sandwich is an emphasis on ingredients, consistency, and craftsmanship. Every sandwich begins with fresh, organic bread delivered daily from ACME Bread and is thoughtfully composed with ingredients selected for quality and flavor.
But the experience does not end at the deli counter. The market features a curated assortment of local and imported products alongside everyday pantry staples, including organic eggs and salt. Customers might stop in for lunch and leave having discovered a new ingredient, specialty product, or flavor to bring home.
The Olive Market also takes a thoughtful approach to reducing food waste while keeping quality products accessible. Customers can look for red tags throughout the store identifying special pricing on select items, helping give products a chance to be enjoyed rather than discarded.
In a world that often prioritizes speed and convenience, Issa wants The Olive Market to offer something different. Hospitality is an important part of the experience, whether someone is a longtime regular, stopping in for a sandwich, or exploring the market for the first time.
“We built this space to be more than just a deli, it’s a hub for community, connection, and hospitality,” Issa shares.
It is an idea rooted in his belief that sharing food and culture can help build understanding between people. By pairing carefully prepared food with warm service and opportunities to discover flavors from different traditions, The Olive Market invites customers to slow down and enjoy the experience.
As The Olive Market continues to grow in Pleasanton, Issa hopes customers will continue looking to independent businesses first. His message extends beyond his own market: when something you need is available from a local business, consider choosing that business before turning to a larger retailer. Each local purchase helps support the people, families, and entrepreneurs investing their ideas and energy back into Pleasanton.
For The Olive Market, that relationship goes both ways. The support of Pleasanton has given Issa and his family an opportunity to share their passion, heritage, and hospitality with the place they now call home, one thoughtfully prepared sandwich and welcoming visit at a time.
