Each summer the Library sponsors a Summer Reading Game, intended to encourage children to make every summer a reading summer!  The game begins the first Saturday after school ends, and usually runs through the first week of August.

A different theme is selected every year. The Children’s area is specially decorated, hundreds of Middle School volunteers are recruited, and children’s programs, movies and other activities are offered each week.

The heart of the game is children reading – or being read to – and tracking their reading time using themed materials designed for this purpose. A number of simple prizes may be earned at different reading intervals (10 hours, 20 hours, etc.), up to a free book of the reader’s choice from our Summer Reading Game collection.  For our most energetic readers a bonus round with additional prizes is offered as well.

The research is clear: children need to stay engaged in reading to avoid the “summer slump” that too often happens in between school years.  Plan now to join the fun at the Library for our next Summer Reading Game!
