LIBRARY TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL LITERACY INITIATIVE

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The Pleasanton Library will be participating in the nationwide early literacy initiative, "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten." The kick-off will begin on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

"Shared reading time is one of the greatest gifts you can give to a child. Having been read to as an infant and toddler has been identified as one of the strongest predictors of success in school. It is also an enjoyable activity and strengthens the connections between the child and the reader," said Sandy Silva, Pleasanton’s Acting Library Director.

Between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., there will be opportunity to learn about the initiative and sign up to participate. Every family with a participating child receives a FREE canvas book bag and a reading log. The opening presentation at 11:00 will be followed by a special concert with singer-songwriter Amy Wigton at 11:30. A drop-by craft activity will also be offered between 11:15-1:00. Adding to the fun, children who sign up to participate will be entered in a raffle for books and other prizes.

Participation in the 1,000 Books initiative not only helps to establish reading as a life-long enjoyable family activity, but it provides children with a solid foundation for literacy. Supported by grants from the Pacific Library Partnership and the City of Pleasanton, the funders’ generosity will allow the Pleasanton Library to offer this program at off-site venues as well, with the aim of including children whose families find it difficult to come to the library.
